This book is dedicated to the New York City legal team of Michael and Debby Smith, and Los Angeles public defender Michael Fischman. Among the last of the "People's Lawyers," they practice in the self-centered 1990s with the morality and loving care of the 1960s still intact. *** On August 23, 1995, Hedda Garza, the author of this book, died in Glens Falls, New York. She was 66 years old. Outspoken and charismatic, Hedda was an impassioned writer and political activist who devoted her life to the cause of social justice. As if obsessed with making freedom and equality a reality, she tirelessly engaged the critical issues of our day, outraged by injustice and committed to the belief that the world could be changed for the better -- even if she would have to change it herself! For years, Hedda fought the battles in the streets. Later she spent more time lecturing and writing than she did marching, but whatever form her protest took, it was always powerfully persuasive. She was a humanist, intent on doing her part to end racial and gender discrimination, war, and the oppression of the poor. In everything she said and did, she was brutally honest, and she demanded that our political leaders set the same example. She was motivated in equal parts by anger and compassion, and she inspired everyone who came in contact with her both to reflect and, just as importantly, to act. I consider myself very fortunate to have served as Hedda's editor and publisher since 1985, but also simply to have known her. It is difficult to accept that someone so full of life is no longer living. The struggles she made her own endure. Thankfully, her work and, for some, the memory of her endure as well.
