ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Here are pictures that tell the true story of war as words cannot tell it. They represent only a very few selections from the many thousands available in public and private collections. Every man who took part in the World War knows that such scenes were not exceptional. Even more gruesome photographs could be shown -- some too horrible to print -- but these will serve their purpose if they convey to the youth of our nation a realization of war in its true colors. For assistance in gathering together pictures from the official records of the United States, France, England and Germany, and from private collections, I am deeply indebted to Lieut. G.
