[Jacques Briend, Catholic University of Paris] Mid-19th-century Germany saw a critical exegesis of the Bible which triggered reactions particularly in England. This ultimately led scholars to come to Palestine in an attempt to use archaeology in order to prove the historical veracity of the Biblical texts.
