"No gas ... not even for cash" Dekkers' reputation as a deadbeat was so bad they wouldn't even sell him gas for cash.

Protected by the FAA.  Numerous serious violations, which would have grounded anyone else, were ignored by the FAA.  The question is why?

A wanted man.  As a result of criminal activities in his native Holland, including skipping out on hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of judgments, Dekkers is unable to return there.

High tech smuggling.  Using dummy 'front' companies, Dekkers was caught, but never charged, with smuggling high technology components out of the U.S. by a multi-agency investigation in the mid-90's.
